SSX 3 is the third game in a line of snowboarding games for the Microsoft Xbox. SSX, an abbreviation for Snowboard Supercross, was the first extreme video game released by EA Sports in 2000. EA continued in 2001 with SSX Tricky, and in 2003 with SSX 3. This release managed to take extreme snowboarding games to a new level with high-quality mapping and graphics, blood-pumping tricks, new characters and events, more serious gameplay, and an expanded music roster. SSX 3 for Xbox is set in a massive mountain location. The mountain's three peaks give you an endless array of opportunity for new challenges and extreme snowboarding.Similar to the previous games in the series, like SSX Tricky, you start by picking a beginner event, character, and game mode. What's new is that you can choose between Freeride, World Tour, and Multiplayer modes. Freeride allows you to explore the mountain without working for points or racing. If you want to increase your skills and learn your character's tricks, World Tour is the way to go. You can input cheats if you can't wait to play the locked characters, but they aren't necessary to have a blast playing this game. You can learn any new trick by practicing. Once you do learn a new extreme trick, you can show your friends in Multiplayer mode. The newer Multiplayer mode gives you the ability to play the game live with two to eight players or to race at home with the traditional two-player game. The Snowboard Supercross games for Xbox all follow the same arcade racing style. In SSX 3, you begin each event with a race, time, or score goal to complete. You start by moving downhill on a slope or by jumping off a cliffhanger. Starting out, the first goal is to always gain speed and use each opportunity of getting air to land a trick. As you learn your tricks and continue getting more complicated with your variations throughout the event, you gain points that will add up until you reach gold level. The more difficult the trick, the more points players will receive. You must really showcase your tricky skills if you want to conquer the mountain in gold. Reaching the prime gold level with trick points, speed, and placement in each of the events will reward you with a gold medal. The medals you receive come along with in-game money, gear, advanced character abilities, and songs for your personal playlist. Moving up the mountain, gaining points, and reaching gold in each event creates an even more thrilling ride down from the final peak. As you complete events on the mountain, you will have access to unique hidden challenges. Explore each event and Freeride the map to search for multiple mini events that will test your trick skills, speed, and style. This will give you an edge for gaining more points and completing time trials. If you are a gamer who loves intense graphics and exciting gameplay, SSX 3 should definitely be a part of your Xbox game collection.
