Viscount Organs

Viscount Organs is a British producer of digital church organs. Viscount makes a range of electronic organs as well as related equipment such as speakers and amplifiers. The company was originally best known for its home practice organs, but in recent years they have also manufactured more advanced organs for churches and other venues.

What Are the Different Types of Viscount Organs?

Viscount has four major lines of digital organ aimed at different types of musicians and sized to fit different spaces.

  • The Chorum line contains Viscount's smallest organs, including compact home practice models like the Cantorum. The smallest organs in this range are keyboard-only, but it also contains larger designs like the Chorum 90 which has three manuals and a 32 note pedalboard.
  • The Sonus and Envoy organ ranges make up Viscount's intermediate level of electronic modeling organs. Sonus organs contain additional speakers to create a richer sound for the home organist.
  • The Regent series is Viscount's family of premium instruments. They are the most similar to classical organs in size and design and come with up to four manuals and 69 speaking stops. All models also include a 32 note pedalboard.

Which Features Should I Look For in a Viscount Organ?

Viscount instruments range from minimal home practice organs to extremely large and feature-rich designs aimed at the performing musician. Features that are critical for one organist might be totally unnecessary for another.

  • Physis is Viscount's advanced digital sound modeling system found in their Sonus, Envoy, and Regent organs. It introduces extensive modeling technology and introduces low levels of randomness into the sound to faithfully replicate the sound of a classical organ. It can also be configured by the user to create a custom sound profile and comes with several pre-loaded profiles.
  • Size is an extremely important consideration when choosing such a large instrument. Make sure that your Viscount digital organ can fit into the space that you have.
  • Extra manuals, plenty of stops and a large pedalboard allow the organist to take advantage of a greater variety of sounds and play more of the classical organ repertoire. However, these features naturally require a larger organ console that takes up more space.
  • An expression pedal is used to alter the volume of the organ during use, giving it a greater dynamic range. Many of their models also have pressure-sensitive keyboards for greater volume control.
  • Different Viscount instruments are made from different materials. More compact models like the Chorum 20 tend to be made from a wood-effect vinyl laminate. Premium models from the Regent range have a real wood veneer that helps them to recreate the pipe organ's sound more naturally. Depending on the model, Viscount organs come in light, medium, and dark oak finishes.
