Which glasses do you use for which drinks?

In general, it is going to come down to the kind of beverage you are enjoying and what experience you prefer. While there are traditional choices, modern bartenders and mixologists have been experimenting with glasses in order to produce a different result.

  • Wine Glasses: Sparkling wines, such as Champagne, are traditionally served in tall, thin flutes that show off their effervescence. However, today some drinking aficionados choose to use wide-mouth wine glasses in order to provide a different tasting experience. Try both types of glasses, and see which you prefer. They typically can accommodate a volume of 5 ounces.
  • Cocktail Glasses: This piece is intended for mixed beverages served "up," or without ice, these generally hold about 5 ounces of liquid. These glasses are optimal barware for martinis, Cosmopolitans, and strong drinks.
  • Highball Glasses: Typically about 10 ounces, these glasses are intended for cocktails that include a large amount of non-alcoholic mixer. These include traditional refreshments like Bloody Marys, gin and tonics, and mojitos.
  • Lowball Glasses: Also called "Old Fashioned" glasses due to the association with that particular beverage, these glasses are short and wide, and are also frequent barware for gin and tonics, negronis, and White Russians. They generally hold 6 to 8 ounces.
  • Snifter Glasses: These are frequently used for dark spirits that are sipped slowly. Snifter glasses generally hold 6 to 8 ounces of liquid but are generally filled with 2 to 4 ounces at a time.
Should you use different Luminarc glasses for different wines?

Yes and no. While you will get a different experience by using glasses that are specifically designed to highlight the particular characteristics of a certain wine, the average person with limited storage space will be served adequately well by purchasing a single set of multipurpose wine glasses by Luminarc Glassware. The exception to this is a situation in which you enjoy drinking a particular favorite type of wine. In this situation, you may be best served by purchasing glasses specifically designed to hold that wine.

  • Red Wine Glasses: These are generally larger in size than glasses intended for white wine, allowing you to dip your nose in to sample the aroma. A fuller-bodied red will require a shorter, rounder glass, while a lighter red would be served in a taller glass. Red wine glass sizes vary dramatically, from 8 ounces to 22 ounces.
  • White Wine Glasses: These wine glasses are generally taller and thinner. A standard white wine glass holds 8 to 12 ounces of wine.
