Game Console Emulator FAQs

What is a game emulator?

For those who miss the days of Sega, Game Boy, Atari, and so much more, game emulators are a great buy. Specifically, game console emulators are for being able to play thousands of classic video games without having to buy each console and handheld separately. As a great money saver and entertainment system, emulators come in many different styles, all available new and used on eBay.

What are the main two types of game emulators for sale on eBay?

Primarily, there are handheld emulators and stationary console emulators. Each has its own benefits, such as portability, extra memory, and different available games. Typically, non-portable console emulators can play far more games than handheld emulators because they come with their own removable SD cards, usually 32 or 64 gigabyte cards.

The memory within the handheld emulators is built-in. Also, the best emulation consoles are beneficial for people who want to play games from many classic systems; handhelds hold far fewer systems, typically only a couple. However, handheld emulators are ideal for players who want to take their games with them when they travel. Another benefit is that many portable emulators can also plug into televisions, similar to the non-portable consoles.

What classic systems are available on emulators?

The gaming systems available vary greatly. Retro game consoles are designed to play classic old-school games. On the other hand, many can play more modern games, creating more choices for the player. Examples of systems these devices emulate are:

  • NES
  • PlayStation
  • Sega
  • Game Boy
  • Nintendo 64

What are modifications in reference to emulator consoles?

When purchasing an emulator from eBay at a reasonable price, there are many different choices in the console itself. It's important to note that some consoles come fully built with almost every classic system available. However, there are others that are specialized.

These specialized emulators are newer consoles from well-known video game companies, and these consoles are specifically built to play games by these individual developers. For example, a Nintendo Wii would play only Nintendo systems, such as NES and SNES. Modified emulators include:

  • PSP
  • Xbox
  • PlayStation
  • Wii
